Study Abroad in 2027: Countries, Courses & Intakes Students Should Start Planning Now

Planning to study abroad in 2027? The right time to start is now.

The 2027 intake may seem far away, but students who start early have more time to research courses, compare universities, prepare for English-language requirements, arrange finances and complete their applications carefully.Immigration rules in popular destinations have shifted a lot in recent years, so the smartest students plan around fit, budget, and long-term outcomes rather than just following the crowd. This guide covers the countries, courses, and intakes to look at, and a timeline to work backward from.

Whether you are a student completing Class 12, pursuing a bachelor’s degree or preparing for postgraduate study, early planning can make the journey much more organised.

Why Should You Start Planning for 2027 Now?

Starting early gives you time to:

  • Understand which countries offer your preferred course
  • Compare universities and entry requirements
  • Prepare for IELTS, PTE or other accepted English-language tests where required
  • Improve your academic profile if necessary
  • Explore scholarships and financial options
  • Prepare documents in advance
  • Identify suitable intakes
  • Avoid last-minute application pressure
  • Make an informed decision rather than choosing a university simply because a deadline is approaching

It is also important to remember that intakes and deadlines vary by country, university and course. There is no single application calendar that applies to every student.

Which Countries Can Students Consider for 2027?

There is no universally “best” study-abroad destination. The right choice depends on your course, academic background, budget, preferred study environment, career plans and eligibility. Here are some of the destinations students can explore for 2027.

United Kingdom

The UK remains an important option for students looking at undergraduate and postgraduate education.

For undergraduate applicants, UCAS applications generally open in the September before the year of entry, with most courses having a January deadline. Some courses have earlier deadlines.

Students should therefore begin researching universities and courses well before the application window.

Popular areas of study include:

  • Business & Management
  • Computing & IT
  • Data Science
  • Engineering
  • Healthcare
  • Finance
  • Law
  • Social Sciences

For 2027, students should also keep themselves updated on student visa requirements and university-specific admission policies, as immigration and compliance requirements can change.

Ireland

Ireland offers a range of higher-education options, including universities, technological universities and other higher-education institutions. Entry requirements are determined by individual institutions and can depend on academic qualifications and English-language ability.

The main academic year generally begins around September, although course availability and start dates can vary.

Popular areas include:

  • Data Science
  • Information Technology
  • Business
  • Finance
  • Engineering
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Healthcare
  • Computing

Students should check the exact course and university requirements before making an application. Education providers may have English-language requirements in addition to immigration requirements.

Germany

Germany continues to attract students interested in a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

German universities commonly have winter and summer semesters, although not every programme is available in both.

DAAD guidance notes that application periods vary by institution and programme; traditionally, many winter-semester applications fall around the May–July period, while summer-semester applications may fall around December–January. Exact deadlines must always be checked with the university.

Popular study areas include:

  • Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Automotive
  • Business
  • Renewable Energy
  • Life Sciences

For students considering Germany, checking programme language, academic eligibility, application route and semester deadlines early is particularly important.

Australia

Australia offers multiple study-start options depending on the institution and programme.

The academic year commonly starts around February/March, while many institutions also offer mid-year entry around July. Some programmes have additional intakes.

Students can explore:

  • Business & Management
  • IT & Computing
  • Engineering
  • Nursing & Healthcare
  • Data Science
  • Cybersecurity
  • Hospitality
  • Education

Australia has also confirmed a 2027 National Planning Level of 295,000 new overseas student commencements. The government describes this as a planning and visa-processing prioritisation mechanism rather than a general cap on international students.

This makes early planning particularly useful for students targeting Australia in 2027.

New Zealand

New Zealand is another destination worth exploring for students seeking international education in a smaller, English-speaking environment.

Education New Zealand reported 92,580 international student enrolments in 2025, an 11% increase from 2024, indicating continued growth in the sector.

Students can explore programmes across:

  • Business
  • IT
  • Engineering
  • Healthcare
  • Hospitality
  • Agriculture
  • Environmental Studies
  • Applied Sciences

For students planning a 2027 start, early application planning is important. Immigration New Zealand has specifically advised students whose intended study cannot begin until 2027 to plan their applications around the relevant academic-year timelines.

Canada

Canada continues to offer international students a broad range of programmes through universities, colleges and other institutions.

The official EduCanada platform provides information on programmes, study costs, scholarships, study permits and the Canadian education system.

Students considering Canada should research:

  • Course eligibility
  • Institution requirements
  • Tuition and living costs
  • Study-permit requirements
  • Available scholarships
  • Programme-specific policies

Because Canadian immigration and international-student policies can change, students should verify the latest requirements before applying.

Which Courses Are Students Looking at for 2027?

Choosing a course should go beyond selecting a subject that is currently popular.

The better question is:

Some areas students may explore for 2027 include:

 Technology

  • Computer Science
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Data Science
  • Cybersecurity
  • Software Engineering
  • Information Technology

Business

  • MBA
  • Business Analytics
  • Finance
  • International Business
  • Marketing
  • Supply Chain Management

Healthcare

  • Nursing
  • Public Health
  • Healthcare Management
  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences

Engineering

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical & Electronic Engineering
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Renewable Energy

Other fields

  • Design
  • Hospitality
  • Media
  • Psychology
  • Education
  • Environmental Sciences

Course availability differs by university and intake, so students should check individual programme pages rather than relying on general lists.

Pro tip: Don’t choose a course only because it’s trending. Match it with your academic background, career goals, and the work rights available after graduation.

Which 2027 Intake Should You Choose?

The intake you choose depends on your academic timeline and the availability of your preferred programme.

January/February Intake

Suitable for students whose academic and document preparation is completed earlier.

May/July Intake

Available for selected countries and institutions, particularly for certain programmes in Australia and other destinations.

September/October Intake

One of the major study periods across several European and other destinations, with many programmes available.

What Should Parents Start Planning?

Studying abroad is also a financial and family decision.

Parents and students should discuss:

  • Total tuition fees
  • Living expenses
  • Education-loan options
  • Available scholarships
  • Accommodation
  • Insurance and travel costs
  • Currency fluctuations
  • Emergency funds
  • Visa-related expenses

Having this conversation early can help families understand the realistic overall budget, rather than looking only at tuition fees.

Why Early Counselling Matters

A good study-abroad plan is not simply about finding a university and submitting an application.

It is about understanding whether the course, institution, country, finances and student profile fit together.

Early counselling can help identify:

  • Suitable courses
  • Appropriate universities
  • Available intakes
  • Entry requirements
  • English-language requirements
  • Financial considerations
  • Documentation requirements
  • Application timelines

Most importantly, it gives students time to make decisions without unnecessary last-minute pressure.
